What are OC pills?

Oral Contraceptive Pills are Hormone containing tablets taken orally by woman in her reproductive age to

What are the possible [not seen in all women] side effects of Oral Contraceptive Pills?

Birth Control Pills are remarkably safe. Side effects are uncommon. The mild side effects of Oral Contraceptive Pills are:

  • irregular menstrual bleeding
  • nausea, weight gain, headaches, dizziness, and breast tenderness
  • mood changes
  • blood clots (rare in women under 35 who do not smoke)

How is the Oral Contraceptive Pill taken?
The correct procedure

One Oral Contraceptive Pill or tablet is taken every day at the same time of the day.

The OC pills are available either as packet containing 21 or 28 pills (tablets).
The 28 pill packet consists of 21 pills + 7 inactive pills, which do not contain hormone.

21 tablets containing packet is to be started on 5th day till 25th day. The Oral Contraceptive Pills are taken from the 5th day. The next packet has to be started on the 5th day of the menses, irrespective of whether your periods (bleeding) has stopped or not.

28 pills containing packet is started similarly on the 5th day. in 28 day packet you keep taking the pill without missing out any day for as long as you want to prevent pregnancy. Hence, as soon as one packet is over, the next packet begins. Thus,

One Oral Contraceptive pill is to be taken DAILY at the SAME TIME each day.

    I-pill is emergency contraceptive pill and have much higher dose of levonorgestrel (1.5 mg) and so much higher side effects than combined ocp. so I-pill is better to be avoided and should be kept aside only for emergency purpose.
