How to know safe days for sexual intercourse?

1

CALENDAR METHOD OR RHYTHM METHOD

2

BASAL BODY TEMPERATURE

using BBT Thermometer
Due to the release of the hormone called progesterone, basal body temperature rises at the period of ovulation. In order to detect this rise in temperature, it is necessary to take recordings at the same time, such as first thing in the morning as soon as you wake up every day, before taking any food or fluids. Temperature can increase by 0.5 to 1.6 degrees. Keeping a record for several months will help you detect a pattern in your cycle. Best time for FERTILIZATION is two or three days before temperature hits its high point. Special thermometers called basal thermometers
are used to detect this rise in temperature.

Changes in

3

CERVICAL MUCUS

Another natural way to predict ovulation is by checking cervical mucus. Cervical mucus is almost nonexistent during the infertile phase, and even the little that it is present is brittle. But as you near the time of your ovulation, cervical mucus becomes thick and begins to resemble egg whites. The volume of secretion increases and this is the best time to conceive.

4

POSITION OF CERVIX

Checking the position of the cervix is another way of predicting ovulation, though it is more difficult than the other two. At the end of the menstrual cycle, the cervix rests low, feels hard and is closed. The cervix begins to soften as ovulation approaches and reaches a position that is on top of the vagina. During ovulation, the opening of the cervix is wide in order to allow the sperm to enter freely.

Ovulation Calendar – This free ovulation calendar can help you determine your most fertile days.

Rhythm method/Calendar Method for Birth Control
Ovulation Calendar helps you predict your most fertile time of the month (ovulation) so that you can achieve pregnancy. Enter your menstrual cycle information (the start date of your last menstrual period, your menstrual period length and your luteal phase length). Then simply click on “View Calendar” to view your personal ovulation calendar.

HOW TO DETECT THE TIME WHEN OVUM IS LIBERATED?

Calendar Method

Basal Body Temperature

Cervical Position

Cervical Mucus

What is ovulation?
Ovulation is the release of mature ovum, which is ready for fertilization.
When spermatozoa swim through the uterus and enter in the Fallopian Tube one spermatozoon (sperm cell) succeeds in mating with the female egg cell, the ovum.

Why should I know about ovulation?
Those who want to avoid pregnancy, that is want to know when it is safe to do sex can benefit using calendar method, also called as rhythm method.

Who cannot use the Calendar Method?
Those girls, women who have irregular menstrual cycles can not rely on Calendar Method.

Who can use Calendar Method for choosing safe days for sex?
Calendar method is applicable for those women who have REGULAR menstrual cycles. If you have regular 26 days, 30 days or 28 days cycle the calendar method is useful.

It is important to know when ovum is available for fertilization. In entire one menstrual cycle only one ovum is liberated.
If your menses are regular than in 12 months only 12 ova will be liberated. (One Ovum per month.) This means if you are having sexual intercourse for 365 days you only have 12 chances of getting pregnant.
One female egg cell (Ovum) is liberated from the ovary 14 days prior to date of expected period.

The days following release of ovum is called the luteal phase.

(menstrual cycle: 28 days, luteal phase: 14 days).

It is recommended that you record your menstrual periods properly it will help you to more accurately predict your likely ovulatory date.

The ovulation calendar at this site http://www.ovulation-calendar.net/
gives option of gender preference, meaning whether you wish to have baby boy or girl.

Boy or Girl: Popularity beats science.
The author does not believe this to be scientifically validated. There is large following of girls and boys who believe in forecast of future based on zodiac signs despite knowing that such predictions of future are neither scientific nor accurate. Similarly, I shall not oppose the luxury of entertaining oneself with the notion of prediction of boy or girl baby.

Fertile Period or Unsafe Period are days on which sexual intercourse is most likely to result in Pregnancy. Calendar Method is simple to use. Useful for women with regular periods.

A
Koparday’s Formula

S-19 = first fertile day
L-10 = last fertile day
S is the smallest cycle
L is the longest cycle.

TERMS USED

Menstrual Cycle is
number of days from the first day of period to the first day of next period.
First day is the day on which bleeding begins or menses/periods start.
Ovulation is the day on which one ovum is released from the ovary and is available for fertilization.
Fertilization is when sperm meets ovum resulting in pregnancy.

For those who want Pregnancy

Remember that focus should not be on those particular fertile days. Happily, sex can be done on other days too.

Let her tick mark on the calendar, Day 1, and counting from there she will get actual dates of maximum possibility of conception. Men are advised not to bother because she intimately knows about her Menstrual Cycle.

You may skip reading the entire text if you believe in population explosion. Pregnancy being natural, even if you do not want, you will have pregnancy when you are doing sexual intercourse after marriage. How many times you do sexual intercourse is not related to pregnancy.

Pregnancy is natural result of sexual intercourse. I emphasize this because I find some couples who are 30 plus being very anxious. Often the Doctor just informs, “Have sex during _ _ _ days,” and the couple abides by the words mechanically. Sex in such couples is emotionless being solely motivated by pregnancy, not pleasure. Sex becomes mechanical and can affect Erectile function adversely due to pressure of performance.
So it is best to have fun and leave the rest to Nature.

Koparday’s Formula is based on

following features:

B
Specific Example
Mrs. Malini’s Menstrual Cycle in the last one year:

Longest 2 days more than a month
L=Longest cycle is 30 + 2 days = 32 days.
and
Shortest 2 days less than one month.
S=Shortest cycle is 30- 2 days that is 28 days.

Only one ovum is released
14 days before the next expected period

Life of ovum is 24 hours inside the body.

Life of sperms is 72 hours inside the body.

Variation in Menstrual Cycle over one year.

Four days before release of ovum and on the day of ovulation fertility is expected to be maximum.

NOTE THAT THE FORMULA IS NOT APPLICABLE IF PERIODS ARE VERY IRREGULAR eg. sometimes 2months, sometimes 18 days.
Click here for another<a href="http://www.drmalpani.com/freefertilitycalculator.htm target="_blank"> Fertility Calendar of my classmate Dr. Aniruddha Malpani.

That means if she has periods every month, in three months only 3 ova are liberated. So if the couple have sexual intercourse daily, 365 days, the chances of pregnancy are only 12.

Only one ovum per month.
14 days before the first day of the next expected period

C
Formula Used

28 – 19= 9

32 – 10=22

The fertile days are
from 9 -to- 22 including
day 9 and day 22.

This date can be arrived at easily for those who have been having regular Menstrual Cycles (MC) so much so that they can predict the date of the next cycle.

For all arithmetic first day of periods (bleeding) is called Day 1.

If she has next period after 28th day, it means her cycle is of 28 days and the next day when she starts getting periods is Day 1 of the next Menstrual Cycle.

A formula I use to give the range of dates when ovum is most likely to be released takes into account,

the variations of MC,

how long sperm stays active inside,

how long the ovum is available for fertilization.

If woman has variation of ” _ _ _ (plus minus one or two days) _ _ _”

After 22nd till she gets her periods there being no chances of release of ovum, pregnancy will not happen (These days are called safe days for those who do not plan pregnancy)

From Day 1 to Day 8 there being no possibility of release of ovum, sexual intercourse does not result in pregnancy.

Broad range

Including 9 th Day up to 22 nd Day are the fertile days.

How correct is the prediction by this method?

If only one ovum is liberated in a month how can so many days be called fertile days?

The reason is explained above. Elaborating the same.

This method is called the calendar method or the rhythm method and is not accurate, as you can see by the number of days that come under fertile days.

There are other methods that can be done at home and do not require visit to doctor.
These methods are based on the fact that level of Progesterone increases
Checking

Cervical Mucous ,

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) are some of them.

Position of cervix

They are not convenient to actually carry out, but I have to mention.

The more specific method is doing USG Ultra Sonography.

Just before 14th day Ultrasonography is done. The ovum can be visualized and the ripening of the ovum along with precise measurements made enables the doctor to say that on particular day ovum will be released.

USG may have to be done 3 days consecutively if need be.

Again repeat the procedure next month.

By now you must have had enough of over dose reading this. So no wonder the follow up for such procedure lasts as long as the motivation is strong.

USG is not done for every person, but selected category of women require it.

This much is enough to put you to sleep if you have not yet slept.
What are the details of Menses that Doctors Usually Ask
This is what I would like to know

How many days does she bleed?

After how many days does she get periods?

What is the maximum duration between two periods and

What is the minimum duration between two periods

in last one year?

Are the periods regular?

Painful?

Moderate or heavy discharge?

SUMMARY

Only 1 ovum is released 14 days before the next expected period.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or issues.
