14 years is hardly any age to die.
Why did the teen girl commit suicide?

This is an incident that happened just yesterday in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, India.

The Tenth standard examination is still going on. Few more exam papers are remaining before the students feel relieved like a prisoner would when let out of jail.

Below find details of the teen girl’s suicide; a tragic event that happend in Ghatkopar, Mumbai.

Caught copying, SSC student jumps to death

17 Mar 2009, 0107 hrs IST, V Narayan & Anahita Mukherji, TNN
MUMBAI: A 16-year-old SSC student committed suicide after she was caught copying during the board exams on Monday. While the police said they
were still to determine the girl’s motive and her parents told the cops that they didn’t know why she had killed herself, the principal of her school said she had been caught copying earlier in the day.

The girl, Bhavi Desai, jumped from the terrace of the seven-storey Sarena Cooperative Housing Society building at Shanti Park, Ghatkopar (East), where she lived. She sustained multiple fractures and succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

On Monday morning, Bhavi had left her third-floor flat to write the geography paper, which began at 11 am. She was a student of Pune Vidyabhavan at Garodia Nagar, which was also her exam centre.

EDUCATIONISTS SAY

Educationists and teacher, Mr. Virendra Mehta, fondly called by his students and colleague, V. U. Sir, reiterates, “It is not students who are the problem, but the parents.”

PSYCHOLOGIST ESTIMATE

For 1 student who commits suicide there are 10,00,000 students who are on the verge of suicide.
It is said, “There are no problem children, there are problem parents”. Think!

REMEDY

Students are told to call their parents as punishment. This is the best time to recommend seeking help from Counselor. By not seeking expert help they pay a heavy price, such as trauma, truancy, suicide.

“As I was taking a round of the school during the exams, the supervisor told me that Bhavi Desai had been caught copying,” said Sarla Narendran, principal of Pune Vidyabhavan. “She was caught with a chit in her hand. We made her write a statement saying she had been cheating during the paper. I confiscated her hall ticket and allowed her to continue writing the board exam. Such incidents are not uncommon.”

According to Narendran, Bhavi was an average student and had never been caught copying while in school. “She was a good girl and mixed well with other students,” she added.

The exam centre is barely a kilometre away from Bhavi’s residence. At about 1.30 pm, she apparently returned to the housing society, went straight to the terrace and jumped. The building’s watchman heard a thud and rushed to the spot to find her lying in a pool of blood.

“We don’t know the exact cause that led her to take such an extreme step,” her father, Deepak Desai, a businessman dealing in industrial chemicals, said in his report to the police. Inspector Vijay Khaire of the Pant Nagar police station said, “The girl’s parents are unaware of the reason. They reportedly said that it might be possible that she had performed badly in the exam. A clearer picture will emerge on Tuesday after we question the school management.”

Bhavi was Desai’s youngest daughter. The others are Mansi, who is married, and Nidhi, who has already graduated. The family and other residents of the building were unavailable for comment.
