But have you heard of a faulty breast implant epidemic? Well that seems to be a case sweeping France. That’s because French authorities are now asking 30,000 women to have their breast implants removed because of unauthorised silicone gel that is potentially subject to rupture.

These faulty breast implants, provided by a French company have proven to have a higher rupture rate than other types of implants. Already 2,000 women in France have complained to the police about them. Meanwhile, a criminal investigation into these potentially dangerous implants and their provider has been launched.

The implants by French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) were banned last year after they were found to contain a non-medical grade silicone filler. Of the 30,000 fitted in France, more than 1,000 have ruptured.

29-year-old held for rape

Kalyan: The Mahatma Phule police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman over the last six years by repeatedly offering to marry her and then backtracking.
The accused, Subodh Metharam, allegedly got the victim pregnant thrice and forced her to undergo an abortion each time. Metharam got engaged to another woman in March.

SECRET
The law of attraction is real. The movie “The Secret” is fake.

I recently saw the movie The Secret , a pseudo-documentary that explains The Law of Attraction . There are things in this movie that need a rebuttaland I haven’t found one elsewhere – so here’s mine.

The important thing here is that The Law of Attraction itself is real. But the arguments and explanations put forward in The Secret are alternately unscientific, mystical, nonsensical or just plain wrong.

First, what is The Law of Attraction (TLoA)? Let’s say you’re poor and really want to be rich. Insteadof always complaining about being poor and always focusing on what you don’t have, TLoA says that you should visualize yourself as rich. See yourself in this situation. Feel what you would feel if you were in that situation. Then, somehow, money will come to you.

Common Sex Problem for Men
Premature ejaculation affects 20% to 38% of men, making it among the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction worldwide.

CURRENT AVAILABLE TREATMENT
Treatment options include certain antidepressants such as Celexa (Citalopram), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine), and Zoloft (sertraline), as well as anesthetic ointments and cream, and behavioral therapies.

But many men aren’t helped by the treatments, Prologo says.

PROCEDURE
The new technique involves inserting a tiny, hollow needle into the skin near the belly button.
Using computerized imaging for guidance, the doctor snakes it down to one of the two dorsal penile nerves. Overactivity of these nerves has been implicated as a cause of premature ejaculation.
“Then we knock out the nerve by freezing it,” Prologo says.
“It’s not painful, though some men feel a cold sensation,” he says.
The procedure takes about 45 minutes, and men can go home the same day.

COST
While still experimental, Prologo estimates the cost at$3,500.
Repeat Injections May Be Needed

After the procedure, men were asked five questions relating to their sexual satisfaction. All improved on at least one sexual-related symptom.
There were no side effects from the procedure. However, three men reported their erections weren’t as firm afterward, for reasons Prologo can’t explain.
Unknown is how long the treatment will last. In the third month of the study, some men started ejaculating more quickly again.
Prologo says repeat injections may be necessary, and he is following the men for six months to see what happens.

QUESTION
Paula Novelli, MD, clinical assistant professor of radiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, says that couldbe a problem. “How manytimes can you repeat it before you do damage?” she says. Novelli moderated the session at which the findings were presented.

ADVERSE EFFECTS
Prologo says he doesn’t think there will be long-term problems because only one of two nerves is destroyed.

FUTURE
Still, he is testing a similar but less aggressive technique that uses heat to decrease the activity of overactive penile nerves without destroying them.
The researchers plan a study comparing one or both techniques to placebo in larger numbersof men.
These findings were presented at a medical conference.

This should be considered preliminary as there has been no “peer review” (Outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal.)

Call for potency certificate before marriage

CHENNAI: For the first time, a call for declaring one’s sexual potency to prospective partners ahead of marriage has been made in the state. And it has come from actor Manorama who is now campaigning for a cause that is widely prevalent but is mentioned only in secret..”I met the chief minister a few days ago and briefed him on the trauma of discovering that one has married an impotent person. I have asked him to bring in a law whereby it is necessary for the bride and groom to produce a medical certificate before marriage stating that they are not impotent and another saying they have tested negative for HIV/Aids,” she added. She also met the deputy chief minister M K Stalin and health minister M R K Paneerselvam for the same cause, and all three have assured her that they would study the matter.

Impotency, in most cases, comes to light only after a couple are married, said Manorama who was moved by the plight of a young girl who a few weeks ago sought Rs 1 crore as compensation from her husband who was allegedly impotent, but had been married off with the full knowledge of his condition by his parents. She has also filed a police complaint against him.

“More recently, a close family member underwent a similar fate, and after discussions with fans, friends and family I learnt that impotency is a major factor in today’s life,” said the legendary actor who has shared screen space with M G R, Sivaji’ Ganesan and Jayalalithaa among others. The rapidly-changing lifestyles, often blamed for disorders like diabetes and hypertension, are increasingly embarrassing many couples in their bedrooms. The number of cases of impotency is rising, says sexologist Dr Narayana Reddy. He sees more than 30 patients a day compared to the early 1980s when he saw 34 patients in a whole year. “Impotency is curable in 96% of the cases, and only those who also suffer from other personality disorders remain difficult to treat,” he added.

Sexologists, lawyers and medical practitioners agree there are two primary expectations in a marriage: Setting up a family and fulfilling biological needs. “Ours is a traditional society and a marriage is considered binding. However, with growing instances of strains in physical relationships, the problem of impotency has huge sociological implications,” said sexologist Dr Narayana Reddy. Manorama is particularly upset that this is one trauma that need not visit either a boy or a girl. “It does not require medical treatment. Only a moral thread of honesty,” she added.

There are at least three cases pending in courts, where the reason for divorce is sexual impotency. “How does one find out such things before marriage?” demanded. the aunt of one of petitioners. Doctors point out that in many cases impotency could also be due to other reasons such as homosexuality or lack of attraction to a particular partner. “However, when a person is aware of impotency it is better to disclose the same,” said fertility specialist, Dr Priya Selvaraj. “Unlike the 80s, women are unwilling to suffer in silence anymore,”she added. “However, an act of law alone may not be enough. We need to create awareness and make it easier, as a society, for voluntary disclosures,” she added.

However, an act of law can travel only so far, felt experts.”Everything cannot be monitored by law,” said lawyer Sudha Ramalingam. “The increasing number of cases shows that rather than looking at horoscopes, parents need to go in for background checks on medical history ,” she added.”Only then can you make married life work for you,” she added. “Creating awareness through campaigns and sex education is the way forward,” said Selvaraj.

Meanwhile, Manorama is harnessing more support for the cause. . ” I will not rest until the issue of impotency is brought out in the open and not whispered behind veils.”
