saheli safe once a week oral oc pill
The main USP of Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) is its complete freedom from side effects and the ease and convenience of its dosage.

  • The only side effect reported with Saheli (Centchroman) is the delay in the menstrual cycles in around 8% of the cases.
  • Saheli may cause urinary incontinence
  • or uterine prolapse.
  • Saheli does not cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness and break through bleeding.
  • Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) has no adverse effect on lipid profile
  • and platelet function
  • as is seen with steroidal contraceptives.
Saheli does not cause weight gain.

Protection from pregnancy

Saheli Contraceptive Pill
Non hormonal safe once a week oral oc pill.

Protection from pregnancy may begin after one month. So first month other protecction like condom is advisable.

Which day to begin Saheli©?

Saheli Contraceptive Pill : Non hormonal safe once a week oral oc pill.
Saheli can be started on the 1st day of menses. (Take twice a week for first 3 months.)

How effective is Saheli©? (Success Rate)

Saheli has a failure rate of about 1-2% with ideal use. The success rate is slightly less than that of combined oral contraceptive pills.

What is Saheli©?

saheli safe once a week oral oc pill
Each tablet contains centchroman (Ormeloxifene) 30 mg

Active Ingredient:
Saheli Contraceptive Pill : Non hormonal safe once a week oral oc pill.
Ormeloxifene is a SERM, or selective estrogen receptor modulator.
In some parts of the body, its action is estrogenic (e.g, bones), in other parts of the body, its action is anti-estrogenic (e.g., uterus, breasts.

How does Saheli© (centchroman/ormeloxifene) work as contraceptive?

Saheli is an the only anti-implantation agent approved for clinical use in the world. Though the exact mode of action is not precisely known, we know that Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) causes an asynchrony in the menstrual cycle between ovulation and the development of the uterine lining.

Saheli Contraceptive Pill : By Best Sexologist for Female Mumbai
In clinical trials, it caused
1. ovulation to occur later than it normally would in some women (Singh 2001), but did not affect ovulation in the majority of women, while
2. causing the lining of the uterus to build more slowly.
3. Saheli (Centchroman) speeds the transport of fertilized egg through the fallopian tubes, hence the fertilized ovum travels more quickly than is normal (Singh 2001).
Presumably, combination of these effects creates an environment that is not conducive for implantation of fertilized ovum.

Mechanism of Action of Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene)

Saheli Contraceptive Pill _ By Best Sexologist Doctor for Female Mumbai Ashok Koparday
The molecule centchroman offers a unique combination of weak estrogenic and potent anti estrogenic properties. Due to this subtle mix of estrogenic and anti estrogenic action it inhibits the fertilized ovum from nidation and thus prevents pregnancy, but at the same time, it does not appear to disturb the other estrogen effects.

How carefully has Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) been studied?

Use of Saheli (Centchroman) as a contraceptive has been extensively evaluated in more than 2000 women of the reproductive age groups who wanted to space their children. Intensive monitoring by
clinical examination,
hematology and
biochemical tests as well as
laparoscopy and
ultra sonographic examinations of ovaries and uterus have shown the drug to be quite safe.
Saheli: Non hormonal safe once a week oral oc pill.

If Saheli© fails and a baby is born will the baby be normal?

Babies born to use failure cases have shown normal milestones.

Will Saheli© (centchroman/ormeloxifene) cause inability to conceive even when it is stopped?

The contraceptive effect is readily reversible and subsequent pregnancy and its outcome is normal.

Why is Saheli© (centchroman/ormeloxifene) better than other contraceptives?

Saheli: Non hormonal safe once a week oral oc pill.
Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) scores over steroidal contraceptive pills because it does not disturb the endocrine system and the normal ovulatory cycle is maintained. It is extremely significant that Saheli (centchroman/ormeloxifene) does not disturb body’s hormonal system.

Other uses of Saheli©

Saheli© (centchroman/ormeloxifene) is useful in treating

  • dysfunctional uterine bleeding,
  • osteoporosis
  • pre-menstrual syndrome and as a drug for
  • lowering lipid levels in the blood.
  • antibreast cancer agent,
  • menorrhagia,
  • mastalgia and
  • fibroadenoma

Hi Dr. Ashok Koparday.

I want know that after stopping Saheli how long will it take for me to be fertile again?

I am planning to start Saheli soon and in 6-8 months I am planning to stop it so that I can attempt to be pregnant. Is it advisable to start Saheli since I am planning to have a baby in near future?

Please reply as soon as possible.

    January 11, 2017 at 9:51 am

    Addition to my question:

The instruction on the pack says fertility is readily regained after stopping Saheli but it is unclear as readily could mean 1 ,2 or 3 months?

Saheli contraceptive pill prevents pregnancy. As soon as you stop taking Saheli the preventive mechanism ceases. Just as the effect of a headache pill lasts for about 6 hours and then it does not work, similarly the molecule is flushed away from the body system and is no more available to prevent pregnancy as soon as you have stopped Saheli.

If your question is how soon will I conceive after stopping
Saheli contraceptive pill, the reply is as soon as you would had you not been taking the pill.
When a woman is not on any contraceptive pill it is not necessary that she will conceive in the first month.
Doctors consider that conception can happen within one year when you have unprotected sexual activity.
Only one ovum is released and available for fertilization in one menstrual cycle. So, in a year you have only 12 chances of conception. Even if you were to have sexual intercourse 365 days, which month conception will happen is left to nature, hence unpredictable. Any month, usually within one year, the conception will occur.

Thanks a lot Dr. Ashok for promptly responding to my query. I am living overseas and Dr.’s here have very little knowledge of the drug Centchroman as it is only sold in India. I really appreciate the selfless service you are providing to the worldwide community.

How long do I need to use additional contraceptive like condoms since I’ve started using Saheli?

Ashok Koparday, Sexologist and Marriage Counselor, Sex Therapist, Accredited

    October 4, 2016 at 4:52 am

Oral contraceptives like Saheli have very high success rates. I consider it unnecessary to use condom if you are using Saheli correctly.
When you are on Saheli pills in the first menstrual cycle please use condom. Thereafter you need not. That is the purpose of Saheli and such oral contraceptive pills.
    Best wishes,
    Happiness doctor,
