The engineering method is a series steps that individuals (engineers and developers) use to develop a product or a solution. These products or solution are used in daily life and may solve issues that users or consumers experience.
Students begin by defining the problem and researching it. They then identify requirements that must be met. They brainstorm ideas and look at what others have done in order to solve the problem.
They then choose the best solution from their list and build a working prototype. This step demonstrates to students his explanation that they are able to turn their idea into a solution.
Once the students have built their prototypes, they test them to determine if they work as they expect. The prototypes can be used to improve their designs.
Before they can have a finished design, they will probably go through several different prototypes. This iterative design process teaches students that they need to keep improving their designs and can’t stop until they have the best possible design.
No matter if your students choose to be engineers or not, they can still use the engineering process to solve problems in their everyday lives. They can apply the skills they learn to any project, from building skyscrapers to making sneakers.
